Why a new vision is required for European enterprise mobility

(c)iStock.com/Pinkypills

Employees are demanding a different experience and require new ways of working. At the centre of this shift is the mobile and IoT device; but European businesses are failing to place this at the heart of their technology strategies.

The compelling evidence speaks for itself: Gartner predicts a $2.5m spend per minute on IoT and one million new IoT devices sold every hour by...

What 2017 has in store for enterprise analytics – and what you need to do about it

(c)iStock.com/sorbetto

The last year has seen big changes in how people adopt and use analytics. Many analytics tools today require users to leave the apps they use every day to gain any benefit. This is inefficient and outdated, which is one reason why we have seen adoption of self-service tools decline 20% since 2014.

Today’s users are desperate for something that is better, easier, and more efficient for them to work with in their daily workflows and app usage patterns. In other words, there’s...

Digital transformation high enterprise priority but communication problems afoot

(c)iStock.com/Pekic

If you’re going to digitally transform your business, rule one is that everyone needs to be singing from the same hymn sheet. Yet this first hurdle seems to be beyond many organisations, according to a report from SADA Systems.

The study, which polled more than 350 IT professionals, found that while digital transformation was an “extremely high” priority for 49% of respondents, the biggest challenge for organisations was helping employees use more modern tools (58%)....

Future workforce sees desktop PCs and desk phones as increasingly irrelevant

(c)iStock.com/zozzzzo

It’s always interesting to note how the employees of the future see the workplace; and the latest note from unified comms provider Fuze argues that almost half (45%) of teenagers see desktop PCs as not needed for modern work.

The survey, which polled 2,500 people between 15 and 17 years old as well as 5,000 workers, also found that three in five (61%) see smartphones as a business essential, while 58% of teenagers see the desk phone as unnecessary. On the workers’ side, three...

New study highlights importance of isolated browsing to keep enterprises safe

(c)iStock.com/maxkabakov

It’s not the device or some of the apps you need to worry about; a new report issued by Ericom Software argues the importance of isolated web browsing as an added layer of enterprise security.

The report has a nod towards a recent Gartner study, which argues, rather bluntly, that it’s ‘time to isolate your services from the internet cesspool.’ 96% of respondents in the Ericom survey...

Turning your people into your most effective defence: A different approach

(c)iStock.com/Jirsak

Board meetings will never be the same again! Since the very public cyber-attack on TalkTalk in the UK in late October 2015 and following numerous other high profile CEO apologies, business leaders are now realising the real damage that a cyber-attack can have on their organisation. Hard-won reputations – both corporate and personal – competitive advantage and market value are all at risk.

The gap between awareness and understanding

Chief executives and...

GamEffective aims to change gamification by making people work smarter, not harder

(c)iStock.com/Sasa Komlen

Gamification has long been seen as a method for improving enterprise productivity. Yet if anything has been learned over the past few years, it’s that it can’t just be tacked onto projects on its own.

GamEffective, an Israel-based software provider, aims to combine gamification and e-learning with its new release, gLearn. The product enables learning materials to be delivered to users in ‘micro-chunks’ based on how employees are performing, and allows...

Are you marketing your apps to employees in the right way?

(c)iStock.com/Pekic

A few months ago, we discussed an interesting idea: in your enterprise, you don’t have users—you have “internal customers.” In other words, rather than treating employees as users who must use your app, you should think of them as customers—people with different choices who should use your app because they want to.

That idea has been kicking around a lot in our heads recently, so we thought we’d...

How and why organisations are moving away from the traditional office

(c)iStock.com/peshkov

By James Tee, Sonin

To fully gauge how organisations are moving away from the ‘traditional’ office, firstly requires us to understand how today’s employees are also drifting from their traditional role in the workplace. Enterprise mobility, cloud-based solutions and BYOD policies in the workplace means that employees are no longer confined to their desks, 9-5 working hours and dated technology to do their jobs. They’re now more engaged, focused and connected than...

Malware and ‘connection hijacking’ remain biggest BYOD risks, report warns

(c)iStock.com/eabff

A new report from data centre provider CyrusOne outlines malware, device theft and phishing as among the key risks for organisations looking to implement a bring your own device (BYOD) policy.

The findings, located in the report entitled ‘The Top Four BYOD Security Risks and How Enterprise Firms Combat Them’, are not especially surprising, yet still bear consideration. Malware was considered the number one risk, with CyrusOne citing a Blue Coat report from 2015.

The report...

Will you be part of the dawn of the intelligent 21st century enterprise?

(c)iStock.com/Olivier Le Moal

Digital technologies are fuelling a seismic shift in the modern business landscape, driven by changing customer expectations and mounting competition from new and nimble ‘born digital’ companies. This has given rise to a new breed of organisation; the 21st century enterprise, which is being forced to rethink traditional market approaches and become more service-centric in order to remain relevant.

To make this transition successfully, businesses must have the ability...

The key question: Should you embrace shadow IT – or keep it at arm’s length?

(c)iStock.com/BeeBright

Few phrases in the enterprise are as polarising as “shadow IT.”

Shadow IT, which refers to the use by employees of apps or devices that are not sanctioned by the company, is widely debated. Some security professionals view shadow IT as an unavoidable reality; others fiercely contest it and view it as a serious security risk. The explosive growth of mobile device uses—from Apple Watches to smartphones and everything in between—has only made the issue more difficult to...

Engage and conquer: Using mobility to encourage field safety compliance

(c)iStock.com/Fertnig

The term field force mobility has referred to a range of mobile strategies employed by organisations using mobile technology to improve field productivity. In the beginning, it merely referred to the idea of getting a field resource to the job and receiving feedback that the job was completed. However, as companies move on to their second and third generation solutions, the goal posts change. Mobility now refers to workforce transformation, and among the key targets are safety and...

Why ‘shift left’ is an important approach to IT service management

(c)iStock.com/halid994

Organisational leaders and the helpdesk are a significant source of support and comfort to employees who try to navigate the daily operations of the business environment. These departments are service centres designed to help others so they can continue to do their jobs and help other people, but part of the issue that IT leaders and helpdesk pros face is answering the same questions over and over again or completing simple transactions that customers could handle by themselves. The key...

These are the top five reasons why employees call the IT help desk

(c)iStock.com/seamartini

Email setup and activation of mobile devices are the most frequent reasons IT help desks get bombarded, according to survey data from managed mobility services provider MOBI.

MOBI studied findings from its own help desk – around 730,000 complaints in 37 categories – to find out the biggest hot button issues among employees and to create greater efficiency in its processes. 12% of all help desk requests relate to email setup, compared to 10% of requests for activating...

“Even the technology that promises to unite us, divides us” – Dan Brown, Angels & Demons

The way digital enterprises connect with their customers is changing.

Consumers are demanding more trusted and personalised experiences in exchange for their personally-identifiable information (PII), while businesses are struggling to protect user privacy in light of growing global security and privacy concerns.

Traditional authentication solutions and methods were simply...

The MDM privacy dilemma: How millennial habits are reshaping BYOD policies

(c)iStock.com/HaywireMedia

Millennials are a generation whose expectations of workplace communication and productivity set them apart from – and often come in direct conflict with – previous generations. Deeply reliant on the latest smartphones and tablets, millennials have been integral in driving bring your own device (BYOD) programs that allow access to corporate data from personal devices. But while the BYOD phenomenon has accelerated productivity and led to greater overall employee...

Research warns of yet more lax employee mobile security practices

(c)iStock.com/allvisionn

One in five employees share their work email passwords, while 12% share passwords to other work applications, according to new research data released by identity and access management provider OneLogin.

The study, conducted by Arlington Research of more than 1,000 US-based respondents in May this year, also found one in five workers do not bother with additional security software on their devices, beyond what ships with the operating system, while employees admit to letting their...

A balancing act: How BYOD can support staff retention

(c)iStock.com/mbolina

BYOD is more than a cost-saving exercise for enterprises. It’s also one of the secrets to building a working environment that fits the modern employee’s needs. CIOs have the opportunity to be at the heart of this process and play a crucial role in employee enfranchisement and productivity improvements – but only if they appreciate the fine lines that must be trodden.

Millennials, also known as Generation Y, actively seek employers with workplace values that are...
