The vast majority of businesses nowadays actively use social media as a standard form of external communication. But how many of these businesses also leverage specialised technologies like archiving to ensure the downside of regulatory non-compliance and other risks from eroding the benefits? (c)iStock.com/yuoak

We live in a world that has seen incredible change in the way we do ordinary tasks. Just as GPS changed the way we travel, online retailers changed the way we shop, and review sites changed the way we pick restaurants, social networking has changed the way we communicate and collaborate with our friends and family. Social networks make it far easier to keep up to date on what your friends and family are doing, plan events and share life milestones.

The five enterprise challenges solved by social collaboration tools

(c)iStock.com/pixelfit

Over the past decade, social media has become a natural, and sometimes necessary, part of many people’s lives. Social media has made it easier for people to keep in touch with distant family and friends, share everyday stories by uploading pictures and videos, crowd source information and more.

Despite our reliance on social media in our personal lives though, enterprises have only recently begun to opt in to this new era of online social culture. But social networking in the...

Why Chatter has changed the world

When Salesforce first announced their Chatter enterprise social media tool, I was sceptical that it would really bring any real benefit to the enterprise.  In my experience, and that of many of my clients, enterprise social tools tend to be Facebook clones that don’t get a lot of use.  In fact, last year I wrote that we just don’t understand enterprise social media for the following reasons:

  • It causes information overload
  • We need to actively filter our feeds, which becomes laborious
  • Disconnection from workflows...
