Enterprise video making ‘quick’ shift to mobile devices, says IBM

There has been a ‘dramatic’ increase in mobile video viewership and resolution in the enterprise, according to a new missive from IBM.

According to data pooled from billions of views across IBM Cloud Video’s enterprise service, mobile viewership had increased five-fold to almost one third of views – 5.8% to 28.8% respectively. More views beget bigger files – the average video file size for the enterprise increased by 29% from 2015 to 2016 – while the company also noted rising viewership outside of the US.

This publication has previously examined the state of enterprise video – so it’s interesting to note from IBM’s perspective a potential increase. This time last year, the problem was a long-standing one; the technical issues of using video are disappearing, but employee buy-in could still be better.

As Dennis Collins, senior director of marketing at West Unified Communications, noted at the time: “Video is quickly becoming a must have resource, whether workers and their employers are ready or not. Organisations that fail to fully support video-based solutions from an IT and broader change management perspective are leaving untapped productivity on the table.”

“Companies are increasingly being held to the same standards as the media and entertainment industry for the videos they stream to employees, partners and direct to consumers,” said Braxton Jarratt, IBM Cloud Video general manager in a statement. “Our enterprise clients are responding by investing in video production and distribution to create more engaging content that can reach a global audience.”

Elsewhere, Lifesize, a video conferencing provider, has announced the launch of Live Stream, the latest addition to its cloud-based application to live stream company meetings, executive updates, and training sessions in high definition broadcast quality. IT admins can enable an unlimited number of virtual meeting rooms to simultaneously live stream events with up to 10,000 viewers, the company added.
