Majority of enterprise mobility usage described as ‘entry level’ or ‘opportunistic’

Two in five enterprises polled by Synchronoss Technologies say they only use mobility for email, calendar, and other basics, making them less productive than their more advanced brethren.

The study, which focused on more than 500 enterprises with an even split across the US and UK, put the companies into four buckets. 38% were designated ‘entry level’ – the aforementioned simple provision of remote email and calendar and not much else – while 43% were defined as ‘opportunistic’, which goes a step further to file-sharing tools, collection of data, and tighter security.

19% were described as ‘additive’, involving greater integration of apps, more varied device data through location and proximity and multi-factor authentication security, while no respondents were at the holy grail of ‘transformational’ maturity, where file sharing tools allow collaboration with third parties and analysis of non-mobility data. Synchronoss added that despite the blowout on the fourth category, 9% of respondents ‘partially’ qualified due to implementing file-sharing systems to collaborate with third parties.

As a result, those who are furthest down the road of mobile maturity are 29% more profitable and 15% more productive than those at the bottom rung of the ladder. According to the study, going from ‘entry level’ to ‘opportunistic’ represents the easiest step change and also the most profitable in terms of performance improvements.

“Productivity doesn’t come from the availability of mobility tools alone,” said Dave Schuette, Synchronoss EVP of the enterprise business unit. “Collecting contextual data from employees’ devices lets a company make informed, deliberate changes that improve its operations and processes.”

“For too many, securing existing mobile assets is still their preoccupation rather than looking for those higher value business outcomes. Budgets are growing but companies don’t always know how and where to invest,” said Chris Marsh, research director at 451 Research’s enterprise mobility practice.

“We have seen though a marked shift over the past two years of a leading edge of companies striking out and doing the hard thinking of what the right combination of people, process and technology is to make mobility a really strategic driver of business value,” Marsh added.
